TAILS FROM GREECE RESCUE
Happy Tails

Thanks to the generosity of some very caring people both here and in Greece, a few dogs and cats have found loving families in Canada and the USA.
In another situation, and because many people here donated towards their trip, we were able to rehome a pair of donkeys on a beautiful property in England.
And lastly, special mention is given to Ruby-Jolie as she was the first Greek-rescued dog to be rehomed here.
We hope you enjoy reading each one of their stories!

BENNY

benny_005.jpg

Benny, born in July, 2007, is a loving pup and will be a happy fellow in his new home; but he's very much full of beans and gets into everything so you need to puppy-proof your home before his arrival!  Benny currently weighs about 40 lbs.  Benny will do well with a regular routine of daily walks and play time in the parks.  He'd probably love to go hiking and swimming too.  He gets along with other dogs but will probably chase cats.  We think Benny would do well if he were to attend a puppy beginner's obedience class to learn his basic commands.  His rescuer says he's a gorgeous dog with a chocoloate color coat and green eyes!  If you'd like to adopt Benny, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update May 18/08
Benny has been adopted and will join his new family, including Pooch, their current dog, on June 7th!
Update June 8/08
Benny, now called Guinness, is with his new family!

VAGOS
Vagos2.jpg

Vagos is a sweet small-size Shepherd mix born in September 2007 and is in desperate need of a new home as the shelter is full and has no room to take him into their care.  He, along with 2 other dogs (both now adopted), are staying in someone's yard but they must be gone from there asap.  Vagos will be microchipped and vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed prior to joining his new family.  If you'd like to foster, foster-to-adopt or adopt Vagos please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an application.

UPDATE:  We have a foster home for Vagos but are accepting applications for his permanent home.
Update May 18/08
Vagos has been adopted and will join his new family, including Calypso, their current dog, on May 24th.

ATLAS

atlassept.jpg

Atlas, a Shepherd/Lab mix, is about 1yr old and is a brave boy.  He was brought to the shelter with his trembling body full of small pellets and his left front leg shattered and paralysed.  He faced this bad luck with amazing courage and he couldn't stop thanking us, kissing us wherever he could catch us. His leg has been amputated and now he walks on his three strong legs with ease.  Atlas deserves a home and a loving family and he's waiting for you.  Atlas is vaccinated and will be microchipped, dewormed and defleaed as well.  To adopt Atlas, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update May 2007
What a happy-go-lucky dog!  I got to meet Atlas during my visit recently.  He's a big goofy boy who will brighten up your life for sure!  With some obedience training this fellow will become a truly loyal companion ... please consider Atlas as he's definitely one of the favourites! ****PLEASE CONSIDER FOSTERING ATLAS SO HE CAN GET OUT OF THE SHELTER****
Atlas is just over 1 year of age and is a brave boy.  He was brought to the shelter with his trembling body full of small pellets and his left front leg shattered.  He faced his bad luck with amazing courage and he couldn't stop thanking us, kissing us wherever he could catch us.  He can walk and run on three strong legs with ease.  We have a short video to demonstrate his ability to walk and run, as well as go up & down the steps, which we will gladly forward to you on request.  Atlas deserves a home and a loving family and he is waiting to hear from you.  If interested in adopting Atlas who has a super personality, please email
diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
UPDATE
We are so sorry that Atlas is still waiting for his new family.  He's been at the shelter for way too long and we'd really like to see him move on to begin his new life.  Please consider this young adult neutered male dog as your companion.  We are willing to do a foster-to-adopt arrangement for a 2 week period, assuming that if you decide not to adopt him, that he'll be able to stay with you until his permanent home is found.
Update April 2008
At last, after spending over a year at the shelter during which time he received excellent care, handsome Atlas has been adopted and will join his family on May 24/08!

CARMEN

Carmen-2.jpg

Carmen is approximately 3 yrs old and is already spayed. She was brought to the shelter several months ago when she was found after being hit by car and suffering from a leg fracture. She was operated on and is now available for adoption. She will need a home that is willing to provide hydrotherapy to help her regain muscle tone. There isn't currently space at the shelter so she's staying at a small kennel and this prevents her from getting enough exercise for her leg. Carmen is curious, very playful and extremely affectionate. And she has a beautiful healthy coat. She needs a home where there's space for her to run around in a secured yard. She misses being able to run and with her leg injury, it needs to be a part of her regular routine. Carmen is a very pretty dog and whoever adopts her will find out that not being 'perfect' doesn't really matter as she makes up for it with personality. If you'd like to adopt Carmen, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application. Thank you for giving Carmen a chance!
Update April 19/08
Carmen has been adopted and will join her family on May 10/08!

LOLA

Lola.jpg

Lola is a sweet small-size Hound mix born in mid September 2007 and is in desperate need of a new home as the shelter is full and has no room to take her into their care. She's staying in someone's yard but they need her to be gone from there asap. Lola will be microchipped and vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed prior to joining her new family. If you'd like to foster, foster-to-adopt or adopt Lola please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an application.
Update April 4/08
A family is waiting for Lola!

LELA

lela.jpg

Lela is a sweet small-size Shepherd mix born in mid September 2007 and is in desperate need of a new home as the shelter is full and has no room to take her into their care. She's living in someone's yard and they don't really want her staying there too much longer. Lela will be microchipped and vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed prior to joining her new family. If you'd like to foster, foster-to-adopt or adopt Lela please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an application.
Update April 4/08
A family is waiting for Lela!

EFFY

Effy5.jpg

I believe Effy is a Kromfohrlander (straight-haired version) but that breed isn't available to select so I've posted her as a Collie mix. Effy is about 1 1/2 yrs old, is only 18" tall and urgently needs a new home. There were initially 3 dogs in her home and when one died, the hierarchy got totally out of whack and now Effy and the other female are not getting along at all. Effy is the younger of the two so she was chosen to be rehomed. Effy gets along well with other dogs generally and, although she hasn't lived with children, she has been good around visiting children. She likes nothing better than to cuddle up on the sofa beside you and give you kisses. She is a pretty dog with a truly spectacular tail. If you would like to adopt Effy, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application. This is an urgent situation needing to be resolved so we would also consider a foster or foster-to-adopt arrangement.
Update April 5/08
Effy has been adopted!

FRAYNE

beautifulfryne.jpg

Frayne was born in November 2007 and is a Hound mix. She's too young to be spayed but will be vaccinated against rabies, have her booster vaccinations, microchipped, dewormed and defleaed prior to adoption. She's friends with Lais so if you're looking for two dogs who already know one another, they would be a good match. If you'd like to adopt Frayne, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update April 4/08
Frayne has a new family!

ASPASIA

photogenicaspasia.jpg

Aspasia was born in November 2007 and is a very pretty girl. She's still very much a pup so will need to be spayed later on but will be vaccinated against rabies and have her booster vaccination, be microchipped, dewormed and defleaed prior to adoption. If you'd like to adopt this pretty girl, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update April 4/08
Aspasia has a new family!

ADAM

adam1mar2308.jpg

Adam is a neutered male Black Lab mix and was born in January, 2007. He's affectionate, very good natured around other dogs and with some training will mature into a great family companion.  Adam is in a foster home waiting for his forever family to come along.  He asks for a quiet adults only home as he's rather timid in new surroundings initially so young kids would really stress him out.  Another dog and cats are okay.  Adam is a gentle and loving dog who'll become very bonded to his human partners.  If you'd like to adopt Adam, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an application.
Update April 8/08
Adam has been adopted by his foster mom!

ROCKY

rockyresized.jpg

Rocky, born in May, 2006, is a Mastiff/Boxer and is looking for a home without young children or cats.  When he was picked up by the side of the road and taken to the shelter, it became evident that he was very ill so it's very likely his previous owner didn't want to treat him and put him out on the street!  Rocky is a 'special needs' dog as he was bitten by a certain kind of sandfly that causes dogs to get Kala-azar (Leishmanias) and once infected, it's in their blood for life.  He's not contagious to other animals or humans and, as you can see from his pictures, he looks great now and will remain so as long as he receives his daily dose medicine ..... Zylaphor (Allopurinol), a very inexpensive medication thankfully).   Rocky shares an outdoor kennel with several other dogs, both male and female - Marco, Esther, Baby Jack, Mara and Vayios, all who are also waiting to be adopted as well.  They play all day long and only return to their indoor kennel at night.  He's a very cute dog, affectionate and gets along with people and other dogs.  He has a certain independence, going back to his lonely days as a stray.  No fears whatsoever.  His only fault is his feeding jealousy ... when his pack receive treats he'll growl and tries to take the treats from the other dogs' mouth.  We figure this is because he was starving for a long time on the streets.  Therefore, even though he gets along with other dogs, we would prefer a home without dogs, to avoid a situation.  Unless of course you're able to manage this by always feeding them in separate areas.  We would really like to find a loving home for him, where he can live as a loved and protected dog for the rest of his life.  If you like Rocky, don't let his need for daily medication prevent you from asking about him --- a loved pet can get a medical condition at any time in its life and require ongoing care, for example become diabetic or hypothyroid, both which require daily medications indefinitely.  I can also send you a picture of him when found and you can see how far he's come; no comparison to how great he looks now.  If you'd like to adopt Rocky, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an application.
Update Feb 26/08
Rocky has been adopted and will be neutered before joining them!
Update March 29/08
Rocky has arrived!

OTHELLO

Othello.jpg

Othello is a sweet black lab mix born in October 2005.  He was found by a lady and on taking him to the vet, they discovered he had a leg injury from being hit by a car.  He's made a good recovery with only a slight limp.  Othello has been boarded at the clinic for many months now and it's time for him to find his family.  The clinic is a safe place for him but it's not a good situation for very long.  If you'd like to adopt Othello please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update March 1/08
A family has adopted Othello!

P1000422.JPG

ODETTE & ODELLE

Sisters2.jpg

Odette (L) and Odelle (R) are very sweet sisters, born in late September, and are very bonded to one other so it would be nice if they could be adopted together (but it's not absolutely necessary, especially if you already have another dog at home).  If you'd like to adopt one or both of these pups, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Feb 25/08
Odette & Odelle have been adopted and how wonderful that they've been adopted together!

NANA

nana2.jpg

Nana is a very special girl looking for a very special family. She was found laying in the hot sun back in June, probably after being hit by a car. Well, Nana is ready to move on now, after spending several months at the vet's clinic. She initially got around with a cart but no longer needs one. She just needs to be fattened up and strengthen her muscles after being laid up during her recovery. She has a nice personality. On her first day at the shelter her tail was already wagging; she was so happy to be able to walk around like the other dogs. If you'd like to welcome Nana into your home and heart, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application. We also have a video available for interested applicants. We want Nana to find a loving family and to live happily thereafter!
Update March 1/08
Nana has been adopted by a lady and her husband from Toronto who just spent a few weeks volunteering at the shelter!

GABRIEL

gabriel3.jpg

Gabriel is a mixed Labrador born in July 2007 and is very much a puppy, still showing lots of baby fat but he'll soon burn it off with all the playtime he gets.  Gabriel will be microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed prior to adoption and will need to be neutered within 3 months of being adopted.  If you'd like to adopt Gabriel, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Feb 6/08
A home has been approved for Gabriel!
Update March 1/08
Gabriel is now with his new dad!

TOYO

Toyo-2.jpg

Toyo (and his brothers, Chaplin and Bongo) were tossed over the shelter fence at the beginning of September.  Poor pups, must have been so scared.  They were quite timid but are learning to not be so afraid day-by-day.  We expect they'll also be a bit timid/shy in their new home initially but with lots of love and patience, will once again learn to trust and become a great family companion.  We think a mix of Shepherd, Lab and Hound.  Born in June 2007.  Will be microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed & defleaed prior to adoption and will need to be neutered within 3 months of adoption.  If you'd like to adopt Toyo, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Jan 26/08
Toyo has joined his new family!

TIFFANY

tiffany2.jpg

Tiffany, estimated to be about 4 months old (probably born sometime in July 2007), is very unusual looking. In reading up on a few possible breeds I believe she's a Kromfohrlander Terrier. She gets along with other dogs and loves to sit in your lap. Tiffany is affectionate and will be a joy to have ... but she'll definitely need regular grooming sessions to keep her looking pretty! Tiffany will be microchipped, dewormed & defleaed prior to joining her new family. She'll need to be spayed, at her new family's expense, within 3 months of being adopted. If you'd like to adopt Tiffany, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Jan 19/08
Tiffany has found her new home!

LUCINDA

lucinda.jpg

Lucinda is a female Shepherd mix born in early September.  She's a real beauty as well as very friendly and affectionate.  Lucinda is friends with Duke, another Shepherd mix; maybe they could be adopted as a pair being they already know one another.  Lucinda will be microchipped, dewormed & defleaed prior to adoption and will have received her rabies vaccination along with boosters, based on her length of time at the shelter and dates given.  If you'd like to adopt Lucinda (and possibly Duke), please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Jan 19/08
Lucinda (and her friend, Duke) have a new family!

IMG_0889.JPG

DUKE

duke.jpg

Duke is a very sweet Shepherd mix born in September and is friends with Lucinda.  He has a very good character and would make a nice companion for someone.  Maybe you'd like to adopt Duke & Lucinda as a pair as they are friends already.  Duke will be dewormed, defleaed and microchipped prior to adoption and his vaccines will be as up to date as they can be, based on his age and length of time between boosters.  If you'd like to adopt Duke, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Jan 19/08
Duke (and Lucinda) have a new family now!

LUCKY

2.jpg

Lucky, a sweet spayed female Collie mix, was born in February 2007 and is described by the shelter staff as a real beauty.  She was thankfully only slightly bumped when hit by a car and then taken to the shelter.  Lucky has a silky coat and is a bit shy at first.  If you'd like to adopt this lovely girl please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Dec 28/07
Lucky has a new family waiting for her.
Update Jan 6/08
Lucky is now with her new family!

BONGO

Bongo3.jpg

Bongo (and his brothers, Chaplin and Toyo) were tossed over the shelter fence at the beginning of September.  Poor pups, must have been so scared.  They were quite timid but are learning to not be so afraid day-by-day.  We expect they'll also be a bit timid/shy in their new home initially but with lots of love and patience, will once again learn to trust and become a great family companion.  We think a mix of Greek Shepherd and Lab.  Born in June 2007.  Will be microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed & defleaed prior to adoption and will need to be neutered within 3 months of adoption.  If you'd like to adopt Bongo, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.

Update Jan 6/08
Bongo is now with his new family!

BOBO

Bobos3.jpg

Bobo was born in February 2007 and looks like a Sheep Dog (mix).  There are different varieties of Sheep Dogs so not sure which but he's pretty darn cute!  He was found running in the middle of a main road with cars driving all around him ... lucky he didn't get hit by one of them!  Bobo is described by his rescuer as being very sweet and affectionate.  If you'd like to adopt Bobo, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.

They were quite timid but are learning to not be so afraid day-by-day. We expect they'll also be a bit timid/shy in their new home initially but with lots of love and patience, will once again learn to trust and become a great family companion. We think a mix of Shepherd with some Lab and Hound. Born in June 2007. Will be microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed & defleaed prior to adoption and will need to be neutered within 3 months of adoption. If you'd like to adopt Chaplin, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.

BENJI

cutebenji.jpg

Benji is a 2-3 year old male (yet to be neutered) small Griffon mix and is pretty darn cute!  He's full of energy and displays a happy personality.  Benji will need to be on medication indefinitely to manage a very common disease he contracted when bitten by a specific species of sandfly in Greece.  He takes Allopurinol (an inexpensive medication) daily and has his blood checked every 6-8 months to ensure that the meds are doing their job and that he's not experiencing any side affects, common whenever humans or pets are on routine medication.  We'll gladly explain this disease to interested applicants once an application has been submitted for consideration.  If you'd like to consider adopting Benji, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca
Update Dec 1/07
A new home is waiting for Benji!

BABY JACK

2babyjack.jpg

Jack was born in January 2007 and when found he was in pretty rough shape, suffering from malnutrition. He's made an amazing recovery and is now waiting to be adopted. After great debate, we believe Jack to be a Mantle Dane mix, possibly mixed with Border Collie or Hound. We're looking for a family who'll be willing to feed Jack only the best food possible so his body and bones continue to grow strong over the next year. He's a really sweet pup, very cute and affectionate and friends with everyone - both humans and dogs! Jack, once given some basic obedience and leash training, would make a great therapy dog as nothing seems to bother him; he's just a happy-go-lucky fellow. If you'd like to adopt Jack, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Jack used to be called 'Baby Jack'. Well, he's no longer a baby and it's so sad to see him growing up at the shelter. We want this fellow to be with his new family and move on with his life. He's so friendly with everyone and will adjust to a new life easily. He just needs to go to obedience classes to learn some manners. You can bet Jack will be a quick learner too! Jack is a delightful fellow and will be a great family companion; he just needs a chance to learn the rules of the game!
Update Nov 30/07
Hurray!!! A family has been approved for Jack and he'll be joining them soon!
Update Dec 9/07
Jack arrived yesterday and is now getting to know his new family and we all wish him good luck in his new found life with them; he deserves it as he grew up at the shelter.  Good luck 'Baby Jack'!!

LOULA

Loula2.jpg

Loula, a striking Australian Cattle Dog (not sure if purebreed), is between 1-2 yrs of age; she has been spayed. She gets along with other dogs and would probably do well in a home where the family enjoys outdoor activities. When she first arrived at the shelter she became anxious everytime someone made an abrupt movement so maybe her previous owner was rough with her. But, she has overcome her initial fears and as soon as she sees you sitting, she comes and hugs you. The shelter staff describe as as 'the perfect dog'. You can teach her anything as long as you have your pockets full of treats! She loves treats!! If you'd like to give Loula the loving home she deserves, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Nov 8/07
We have a foster-to-adopt situation for Loula so hopefully she'll be arriving in a couple of weeks.
Update Nov 25/07
Loula is now in her foster home; what a beautiful looking dog!
Update Nov 30/07
Loula has stolen the hearts of her foster family and will be staying with them!

RALOU

Ralou5.jpg

Ralou is an adult purebreed Doberman, about 3 yrs old.  She's described as very sweet and affectionate and always ready for hugs.  How did this beautiful Dobe end up at the shelter?  Well, they received a call one day that a Doberman was wandering the streets.  They went to get her and noticed that she was well fed and was wearing a very nice, expensive collar.  Once at the shelter, she was vet checked and this explained it all --- Ralou had been bitten by the notorious sandfly, causing her to have contracted kala-azar.  We then called the person who called us about her and informed him of her situation and that we would be spaying her.  His reply .... she's already spayed.  He was her owner and had dumped her because she got sick!!  Well, Ralou has received her initial treatment for her illness and has responded well but it also means she'll need to be on life-time medication to manage it as it's in her system now.  Dogs who contract this disease take a daily dose of Zylapour (Allopurinol), an inexpensive medication, and they need to be blood tested every 6 months, to ensure their blood levels are normal.  Other than that she can live a normal and happy life.  We would love for Ralou to find a loving home so if you'd like to adopt her, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Nov 2/07
The wonderful family who adopted Tobi back in April 2005 are waiting for Ralou to join them in a few weeks, once she's been signed off by her vet for travel.  Tobi's sister, who was already there when he arrived, passed away last month from old age, and he's become quite depressed since then.
Update Nov 25/07
Ralou is now with her new family and her new brother and she received a good report card on Day1!

SUNDAY

Sunday1.jpg

We believe Sunday was born in May 2007 so still very much a pup! She looks like a short-coated Collie but has a bit of Husky with those 2-colored eyes, one brown & one blue. Sunday was struggling to survive when found but she's made a huge recovery over the past two months. She gets along well with other dogs and also seems okay with cats. Sunday's rescuer says she's a sweet dog. We would also consider a foster-to-adopt arrangement for Sunday so, if like Sunday, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Nov 2/07
Sunday will be going into a foster home tomorrow and from there we hope to find her a new loving family.
Update Nov 10/07
Sunday was adopted today!

JACKIE

jackieo.3.jpg

Jackie is thought to be a smooth-coated Collie, mixed possibly with Rat Terrier (the ears), and we think born in January 2007.  She's spayed and microchipped, defleaed and dewormed, weighs about 17kg and is very pretty.  We're looking for a home where there's someone home a lot as she really craves your attention and loves to be close to her human friends.  Jackie was found hiding in some bushes one day when we were having lunch.  A house with a fenced yard and without young children is needed as Jackie needs time to adjust with as few stressors as possible.  She got along fine with other dogs at the shelter but initially may need to figure out the heirarchy in a new situation.  If you'd like to adopt Jackie, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Oct 28/07
Jackie's foster family decided to adopt her today -  hurray for Jackie and huge thanks to this wonderful family for giving Jackie a new life!

MARCO

Marco2.jpg

Marco (and his sister, Esther) were born in September, 2006.  Marco is a Greek Shepherd dog which is a working breed so will enjoy having a job to do as part of his daily routine.  Marco is very low key, not overly energetic or difficult to handle and he's described by those who know him as 'very quiet, sweet & lovable'.  If you think Marco is the dog for you, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update May 2007
I visited the shelter recently and got to meet Marco; he's a lovely dog and is hoping to find his new family soon.  We all find it sad to watch such a nice dog grow up at the shelter ... please consider adopting Marco!
Update Sept 14/07
Marco has been adopted by the same family who adopted his sister, Esther and he'll join them once we can arrange for him to travel.
Update Oct 14/07
Marco is now with his sister, Esther, and her new family and, although he's very shy right now, we feel certain he'll blossom over time, just like his sister.  She is very happy that Marco has come to live with her!

DENNY

Dennis-standing.jpg

Denny is about 1 yr of age so was born in late Summer / early Fall of 2006 and is a Standard Schnauzer X. He's a handsome fellow and has a nice personality. He was dumped outside his rescuer's home one day. Denny likes other dogs and seems okay with cats as well. If you'd like to adopt Denny, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Oct 14/07
Denny is now with his foster-to-adopt family so hopefully all will work out and he'll be staying with them.

MARIOS

portorafti222.jpg

FOSTER HOME NEEDED FOR THIS DOG ASAP AS HE IS STILL ON THE STREET AND AT GREAT RISK! IF YOU CANNOT ADOPT PLEASE CONSIDER FOSTERING MARIOS UNTIL HIS PERMANENT HOME IS FOUND. Marios is a well-adjusted 4 month old Black Lab pup, born in April 2007 (and is a brother to Natasha who has already been adopted). He's currently being cared for by his rescuer but is w/o a roof over his head. Instead he's living in a sheltered bushy area set in from the main road in Porto Raphti along with Andy, Lily, Stephanie and Lydia. Each day he goes for a walk to the sea and swims all day long. He has the most wonderful personality .... so logical, so obedient and so sweet at his tender age of 4 months! If you'd like to foster or adopt Marios, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an application. (In the picture, Marios is on your right.)
UPDATE June 14/07
We've found a foster home for Marios so he's been taken off the street to his rescuer's garden area where he'll remain safe until he joins his foster family.  In the meantime, we still need to find this wonderful dog a permanent home!
UPDATE July 17/07
Marios is now in his foster home in Toronto.
UPDATE July 24/07
Poor Marios has suffered a setback.  It appears he has Erlichiosis, a tick-borne disease.  (It can take a few months to show up in the system.)  He's under vet care but it appears he'll suffer from some mobility problems.  But, with treatment, in time he should be otherwise a normal, happy pup.
UPDATE Oct 5/07
We're so happy for Rio (aka Marios) .... he went home with his new mom yesterday.  He still has some mobility issues but has made good progress so with more time, perhaps there'll be even more improvement.  Huge thanks to Michelle and Niomi, his foster parents; they made it possible for him to get this far so we are very grateful to them.
Rio, we wish you a happy life; you deserve it!

MANOLAKIS

Manolakis.jpg

Manolakis, born in late January 2007, is a baby Shepherd mix and was found recently with his front right paw severely squashed.  He's highly adoptable but needs the leg attended to ASAP, possibly  amputation, to avoid ongoing infection caused by irritation.  If you would like to adopt Manolakis and help with this expense or if you'd like to donate towards his surgery, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca.
Update June 1/07
A foster home has been offered to Manolakis so he'll be joining them at the end of June.  In the meantime we need to raise $800 to cover his surgery so if you'd like to donate towards this, it would be most greatly appreciated!
June 17/07
Manolakis is now in his foster home.  He has an 'look see' appointment for next week and then surgery will take place a little later on.  We're still needing donations to help raise the $800 for his surgery vet bill so any amount would be greatly appreciated!
UPDATE June 18/07
Manolakis is settling in at his foster home and is visiting the vet today for a pre-surgery look-see.  We are still needing to raise $500 for his surgery which we need to book asap as the stump is really making life a difficult situation for him.  Every dollar helps as it all adds up so please accept our thanks for whatever you can spare.  Manolakis especially thanks you!
UPDATE June 21/07
Manolakis had his surgery and was also neutered today and he got thru it with flying colors!  What a little trooper!  For a pup who has endured so much pain in his short life and to still have such a strong spirit, he'll surely mature into a loyal companion for his family!  Also, we want to thank all the wonderful people who donated towards his vet care as without it, we couldn't have helped Manolakis to get the vet care he urgently needed; now he can move on with the rest of his life!  So, once he recovers we'll see who'll be the lucky family to adopt him!  We're accepting applications and will select a home which is the best fit ... maybe it's you!  He sends a hug to each and everyone of you who contributed to this!  Bless you all!!
Update Aug 27/07
Manolakis has fully recovered from his leg amputation and is ready to join his new family and get on with the rest of his life.  He looks like a shepherd but is the size of a border collie.  He's also neutered.  If you'd like to adopt a dog who has a super personality, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Sept 17/07
We're happy to say that Manolakis has found his forever home!  Thank you to all who helped him along his journey!

ESTHER

Astarte-B.jpg

Esther (and her brother, Marco) were born in September, 2006.  Esther is a Greek Shepherd dog who is not overly energetic or difficult to handle.  Esther is described by those who know her at the shelter as 'very quiet, sweet and lovable'. If you think Esther is the dog for you, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
UPDATE  May 2007
I've met Esther and it's a real shame this lovely dog is growing up at the shelter.
UPDATE - Esther is going into a foster home on Sept 8th so hopefully that gets her one step closer to finding her forever family!
UPDATE - WE NEED TO FIND ESTHER ANOTHER FOSTER OR FOSTER-TO-ADOPT HOME ASAP AS SHE IS NOT HAPPY BEING WITH THE OTHER 2 DOGS IN HER FOSTER HOME.   HER FOSTER MOM FEELS IT'S BECAUSE SHE HAD ESTABLISHED HER ROLE WITH HER PREVIOUS PACK BUT IS NOW UNSURE OF HERSELF SO FEELS SHE HAS TO DEFEND HER STATUS WITHIN THIS NEW PACK.  SHE NEEDS TIME TO ADJUST TO A NEW LIFE AND NEW SURROUNDINGS HERE SO IF YOU CAN OFFER THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ESTHER BY  FOSTERING HER, PLEASE EMAIL diannealdan@sympatico.ca OR CALL 416-361-5046 ASAP SO WE CAN DISCUSS THIS POSSIBILITY.  SHE WOULD BE A GREAT DOG FOR SOMEONE WITHOUT OTHER PETS.  A HOME IN THE COUNTRY WOULD BE IDEAL FOR HER BUT WE'LL CONSIDER ALL OFFERS.
UPDATE Sept 13/07
Esther is going to meet her potential new family tomorrow and if all is good, they are also interested in adopting her brother, Marco.  Just as an FYI, after the first 36 hrs Esther was doing okay with the other dogs in her foster home; she just needed time to feel safe.  We're all hoping that the family takes a liking to Esther tomorrow and wants to adopt her!
Update Sept 14/07
We took Esther to meet her new family and came back without her!  She will be living in the country on a large property which will be paradise for her and Marco, her brother who they have also offered to adopt so they can be company for each other!  We are very happy that Esther and Marco have found such a great family to live with after basically growing up in a shelter environment; they've earned it!

LINOS

Linos.jpg

Linos is a real sweety!  He was born in December, 2006 and was found roaming the streets all alone by a woman who took him to board at her vet's clinic until his new family is found.  He's like all pups - happy, very smart and affectionate!  We have a short video of Linos available on request (assuming you can download it to your computer).  If you'd like to adopt Linos, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Sept 2/07
A new family has been approved for Linos!

MARA

mothermara.jpg

Mara-Portr.jpg

****URGENT****
PLEASE CONSIDER ADOPTING OR FOSTERING MARA.
If we don't find a home for Mara, she will have to go back to the fields where she was found; that would be a terrible thing to happen but there is little choice.  She's been at the shelter for over 8 months and the space is needed for a dog with more urgent needs.  As much as they love her, they will likely have to make a decision they don't want to make soon.  Mara is a 2-3 year old spayed pure Pointer, probably abandoned because she didn't want to hunt.  When first found with her pups, she was very timid of people but she learned to trust again.  Mara is very sweet but definitely needs a kind and understanding family as she's been through a lot; she's affectionate to those she's come to know since being found but she'll most likely be shy in her new surroundings initially.  And, with time to learn that all is good, once again she'll be a devoted companion.  If you'd like to offer Mara a loving home, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Aug 21/07
We're thrilled that a new family has been approved for Mara!
Update Sept 2/07
Sweet Mara is now with her new family!  We are so happy that she now has a family of her own after living at the shelter for many months.

VAYIOS

Update May 2007
I got to meet Vayios during my visit and he's a lovely boy, just waiting for someone to open up their heart & home to him!  It's always a shame that such a nice dog is growing up in a shelter; please consider adopting Vayios as he deserves a family of his own!
Update July 17/07
We'd like to find a foster home for Vayios as he's been living at the shelter for several months now; if you would like to foster this sweet dog, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca.

CHLOE

C.Chloe.jpg

Chloe is a very cute female Black Lab mix who was rescued in April 2007.  Being so young, there's not much to say about her really; obviously she'll need to learn all the things puppies need to learn.  If interested in adopting Chloe, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Aug 27/07
A new family has been approved for Chloe!

STEPHANIE

Stephanie.jpg

FOSTER HOME NEEDED FOR THIS DOG ASAP AS SHE IS STILL ON THE STREET AND AT GREAT RISK! IF YOU CANNOT ADOPT PLEASE CONSIDER FOSTERING STEPHANIE UNTIL HER PERMANENT HOME IS FOUND.
Sweet Stephanie was born around early March 2007. We believe she's a Collie, mixed with Shepherd but being so young, pups change a lot as they mature. Maybe the mix breed will become more evident as she grows. She was found recently inside a sewer pipe, scared to death, near the racetrack in Markopoulou. She has a wonderful personality and will make a nice addition to an active household. If you'd like to foster or adopt Stephanie, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an application.
Update June 21/07
A new family has been approved for Stephanie and she'll be joining them soon!

PERICLES

periclescropped.jpg

Pericles is a sweet male Pointer mix, born in April 2007, who's looking for his forever home.  Being so young, there's not much to say about him really; obviously will need to learn all the things puppies need to learn.  Pericles was adopted recently but the 4yr old child in the home is petrified of him .... apparently a big dog running at large awhile ago knocked him down but the family thought a puppy would be alright ... not so.  Pericles is a little submissive when approached and falls on his back (to have his belly rubbed) but this will be overcome with time to adjust.  He'll be a really nice companion for someone.  If interested in adopting Pericles, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update Aug 27/07
A new family fell in love with Pericles and he joined them today!

OLYMPUS

H-Olympus.jpg

Olympus is a male Shepherd mix and will be available for adoption in early August.  Judging by the size of his paws, we would have to say he'll be a BIG boy!  Now you know why we named him Olympus!  Being so young, there's not much to say about him really; obviously will need to learn all the things puppies need to learn.  At the time of adoption, he'll be microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, have his first booster and be dewormed and defleaed.  We are accepting applications and when old enough, he'll join his pre-approved family.  If interested in adopting Olympus, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.
Update July 30/07
A new home has been approved for Olympus so he'll be joining them in mid August!
Update Aug 18/07
We are happy for Olympus finding his new family.  He has the softest face and eyes and will be a wonderful companion!

LITSA

Litsa.jpg

Litsa is waiting for her new family. She's a very pretty girl with a sweet disposition .... described by shelter staff as affectionate and with a golden heart. She looks like a small Shepherd/Husky mix and was born in April, 2006. She and her two sisters were thrown onto the shelter property over the fence one day in June, 2006. Her sisters have their new homes already. We're looking for experienced dog people who can offer Litsa a quiet lifestyle, especially in the beginning, without young children. Litsa would love to become your new family member but you must be understanding of her shyness and help her to regain her confidence. It will take both time and patience for her to gain your trust; she is not at all aggressive, just very timid. She wants very much to be your best friend but isn't quite sure if it's alright. Obviously she was quite traumatized by past events leading up to her being tossed over the shelter fence. If you feel you have the right home for Litsa, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca.
Update July 25/07
Wow ... Litsa has finally found her new family and will be joining them soon!
Update August 4/07
Sweet Litsa is now with her new family!
Update Nov 17/07

Update May 28/07
I visited with Leon this month and he's a lovely dog for a family, being very sweet and easy going!  It's a real shame he's growing up at a shelter but we're still confident he'll become someone's best friend one of these days ... please consider Leon!

ARES

Ares.jpg

Katie, our rescuer, spotted a lactating mom and was able to follow her back to her hiding spot.  There she found a litter of 5 pups (all females except 1) and their mom living in the back yard of an old apartment building, sleeping on the concrete floor.   She brought them a warm blanket to keep them warm until they were moved to the shelter.  Annie, their mom is a lovely dog, aged at about 18 months, will be available for adoption once her pups are old enough to be rehomed.  The pups were born in late February so have to wait until their old enough to have their rabies vaccination before being adopted.  You can see mom resting next to Ares in one of the pictures.
Ares, synonymous with the Greek God of War, is the only male of the litter.  We're sure he'll turn into a wise man when he matures!
If interested in adopting Ares, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.

All she likes to do right now is sleep and suckle her mom. She also likes to play with her siblings, mimicking a big dog by barking and growling, taking a couple of steps and all the while with her belly on the floor of her kennel. If you'd like to adopt Eri, please email diannealdan@sympatico.ca for an adoption application.

BLANCHE

Blanche1.jpg

Blanche, mother of Ginger, Lenny, Audrey, Elmo and Emmy, is barely a year old and will be needing her new home come June when her pups are ready to join their new families. Blanche is an absolute darling, described as playful as her pups and extremely affectionate. She jumps all over the shelter worker, giving her kisses whenever she can. She'll have to learn in her new home that it's not polite to be all over us but for now it's allowed! We have a short video of Blanche running in the field at the shelter if you'd like to see it. Blanche will be microchipped, dewormed once, defleaed and will have received her rabies vaccination prior to adoption. ****ORPHEAS NEEDS OUR HELP****

Orpheas2.JPG

We have wonderful news to share with everyone!  Orpheas, who's been at a shelter since February 2006, after being dumped by his owner because he has an oral tumour on the inside lower jawline, will be arriving here on Saturday, March 17/07!!  Unfortunately there was no help available for him in Greece as their experience with cancer and chemo and any other options relating to post-op treatment is not something they're familiar with.  After several months of waiting for a foster home, a wonderful lady from Guelph committed to fostering Orpheas.  We're all very excited that he'll finally get a chance to have the tumour biopsied and receive treatment as recommended.  However, this will be quite the task, both for him physically and emotionally, and financially for the rescue organization.
UPDATE - May 31/07
Orpheas has been thoroughly checked out by the vet and he's in very good health and an excellent candidate for the surgery.  He's been neutered as well.  We're therefore sending out this urgent appeal for donations so we can book a date for his surgery to remove the mass in his mouth.  This is going to cost about $3,000 but we all feel that he deserves a chance.  If we don't remove it, it will continue to grow and most likely ulcerate, causing a lot of discomfort as well as shortening his life considerably as we would not allow him to suffer needlessly.  We've raised about 50% so far so we still have a ways to go before we can book his appointment. This is going to be a real challenge but with your help, hopefully we can see this thru and Orpheas will have a good quality of life for several years to come.  All of Orpheas' friends thank you for your support - Connie, Katie, Vana in Greece, Pia his foster mom, and me!  Updates will be available along the way to everyone who's expressed an interest in helping Orpheas.  If you'd like to make a donation to help us raise these funds, these are your payment options:
By sending a cheque payable to GAR (with a notation that it's for Orpheas to Mrs. Dianne Aldan, 614 - 25 The Esplanade, Toronto, ON M5E 1W5;
By clicking on the PayPal link below;
By emailing me your Visa details; or by making an online deposit at any branch of the TD Canada Trust for deposit to Greek Animal Rescue - Account #0680-5202168, Branch 1025, Toronto, Ontario.
Thank you all for considering to help Orpheas!
Update June 10/07
Wonderful news ..... Orpheas' foster mom has decided to adopt him!  Now we really need to raise the funds for his surgery more than ever as that's the reason he came here for in the first place!  Please help if you can; every dollar will help!
Update June 19/07
Orpheas has his surgery booked for July 4th but we still need to raise another $1,000 to cover it.  Please donate any amount you can afford as it'll help us afford the surgery.  He's counting on us so we can't let him down at this stage of the game!  Thanks so much!!
Update July 23/07
Everything has worked out perfectly for sweet Orpheas; he's had his benign tumour removed and is recovering very well, even eating berries from his new mom's raspberry bushes!  We sincerely thank everyone who helped us keep our promise to him when he travelled some 6,000 miles to get a chance for a new life here!
